The Wake County Register of Deeds records deeds, deeds of trust and other real estate documents. Its online Consolidated Real Property Index can be searched, with some records going back to 1785.
Foreclosure sales
Most foreclosures are power-of-sale. After a hearing before the Wake County Clerk of Superior Court authorizes the sale, the trustee or substitute trustee sells the property at public auction at the place named in the notice of sale. The notice is posted in the area the Clerk designates for public notices at least 20 days ahead and published in a local newspaper, and the sale must be held between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on a day the Clerk's office is open.
Local rules for owners
  • Every short-term rental operator (stays of 30 days or less) must get a zoning permit from the City of Raleigh. Short-term rentals are a limited use in the R-1, R-2, R-4, R-6, R-10, RX, OX, NX, CX and DX districts, and the permit number must appear in all advertising and on the property.
  • In multi-unit buildings, no more than 25% of the units, or two units if greater, may be used as short-term rentals, and operators must keep guest records for three years.
